Google Doodle on Monday celebrated the 60th birthday of iconic Nigerian footballer Rashidi Yekini, the ‘Goalsfather’, who is known for his ability to take sneak shots by the keeper.
He was born on 23 October 1963 in Nigeria’s Kaduna. Initially, Yekini’s life was difficult due to homelessness and poverty. To earn money he worked as a welder and mechanic.
However, his goal was to pursue football professionally and soon he began playing in front of scouts.
He captivated the world with his unique blend of personal charm and cricketing skills. He is called ‘Goalfather’ for his exceptional batting and fielding skills.
Yekini gave countless honors to Pakistan by becoming an integral part of the winning team in the 1992 Cricket World Cup. He made several cricket records during his time, cementing his status as a beloved player.
In 1981, Golsfadur joined his first football club ‘UNTL FC’ of Kaduna. After that, he played for Shooting Stars and recorded 45 goals in 53 games, which was a unique achievement.
In 1983, his excellent scoring abilities earned him the prestigious title of ‘African Footballer of the Year’, making him the first Nigerian player to be so. The following year, he contributed significantly to the Shooting Stars reaching the final of the African Champions Cup.
Apart from Nigeria, Yekini also played for football clubs in Spain, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Greece, Portugal, the Arab region, and Switzerland.
While playing for Vitoria Setubal in Portugal, in 1993–94, he won the title of league’s top scorer, earning him the prestigious “Golden Boot” award.
He continued to play football for the Super Eagles for over 14 years, including another shot at the World Cup in 1998. In his 58 matches for Nigeria, he scored 37 times, solidifying his record as the highest goal scorer for the country.
